The title of Lyle Ashton Harris’ new book got me thinking about how we’ve lived for over a decade now. Ex-patriates are still visitors and guests, so it’s an odd combination to travel as teacher and photographer. One requires critical response, hopefully constructive, but by definition judgmental, and always from partial information; the other requires withholding judgement, despite personal belief or values, to observe rather than respond…
